Physical Climate Risks in Infrastructure Assets at High Resolution
Infrastructure assets such as toll roads or railways can span over large geographic areas and can be exposed fully or partially to climate hazards. Climate risks such as floods (SLR/coastal or riverine) can affect a portion of geographically ‘lengthy’ assets but significantly impact the availability and performance of the entire (or partial) asset.
In this note we illustrate how Klimetrics can help to identify, measure and report most at-risk segments of infrastructure assets using two toll road examples:
the Osceola Parkway in Florida, a 17.5-mile parkway that provides access to Walt Disney World
the Eastern Distributor, M1, a 6 km toll road forming a key link in Sydney’s orbital road network, linking north Sydney via the Sydney Harbour Tunnel and Sydney Harbour Bridge, and Sydney’s CBD with Sydney Airport and the city’s southern suburbs
Flood risks at high resolution can be assessed by combining CMIP climate model projections with Digital Elevation Models which are satellite mapping representation of the Earth’s surface and can include buildings, infrastructure, and vegetation, so called DSM (Digital Surface Models). Klimetrics uses a high resolution 1 arc second, 30x30m DSM.
